9/11, War on Terrorism: Sep. 11, 2001
New York, NY
The “9/11” terrorist attack began at 8:46 a.m. when American Airlines flight 11, hijacked by five Islamic militants associated with al-Qaida, was flown into the north tower of New York City’s World Trade Center. Seventeen minutes later, a second hijacked passenger jet, United Airlines Flight 175, struck the south tower of the WTC. The resulting damage and fires caused both towers to collapse. A third hijacked passenger jet was flown into the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked aircraft was likely intended to strike the Capitol, but its passengers fought back and forced it to crash in a field in Shanksville, Pa. A “War on Terrorism” directed at al-Qaida and its affiliates began on October 7 with aerial bombing campaigns.
