American Independence Museum

Exeter, NH

The museum features Revolutionary War artifacts in a 1721 house with display room exhibits. It emphasizes the sacrifices made to protect the freedom Americans enjoy today. A highlight is Folsom Tavern, a gathering place for patriots who planned America’s independence from England. After the war, the tavern continued to serve as a meeting place for the Society of Cincinnati, a group of war leaders like George Washington who sacrificed for the greater good during the war. The group was named for Lucius Cincinnatus, a Roman general, who, in 450 BC, was given dictatorial power for six months to repel an invasion. After quelling the invasion in 16 days, he renounced dictatorial power and returned to farm life.
