Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is a cultural and educational research center that promotes an understanding of the significance of civil rights developments in Birmingham. It uses interactive programs like “Tug-of-War” to describe 1963 events including the “Children’s March” and “Sixteenth Street Church Bombing.” The oral history collection contains over 600 interviews from people who experienced Alabama before, during and after the civil rights movement. They discuss church bombings, the KKK, Freedom Riders and breakthroughs like the first female police chief of Birmingham and the first black woman in the Alabama Legislature.
