Colonial Williamsburg is the premier center for the preservation and interpretation of American colonial history. Reenactments depict everyday life as it was in the 18th century. Named for England’s reigning King William III, it was founded as the capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699. The city is steeped in history. Political leaders including presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler attended the local College of William & Mary. Gen. George Washington assembled the Continental Army in Williamsburg in 1781 for the siege of nearby Yorktown and the winning of American independence. A Civil War battle was fought in Williamsburg in May 1862.
