Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration

The museum documents the story of American immigration with photographs, heirlooms, and searchable historic records. Visitors to the great hall, baggage room and restored dormitories can feel the spirit of hopeful arrivals, and interactive exhibits bring their voyages to life. Among them is the “Flag of Faces,” an American flag mosaic comprised of past immigrants. It’s a reminder of the American moto: E pluribus unum – “Out of many, one.” “Journeys: The Peopling of America – 1550s-1890,” depicts Native Americans, those who arrived against their will, and immigrants who came to America during the Colonial and Victorian eras until the 1892 opening of Ellis Island.
