Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Harpers Ferry, WV

Harpers Ferry was a focal point for many critical events in U.S. history. Here you can find Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which has 19th-century buildings, a Civil War Museum and John Brown’s Fort, a key site in an 1859 abolitionist raid. Brown’s raid took in both the Armory and the Arsenal, which were two separate but neighboring facilities. On September 15, 1862 the surrender of Federal troops, approximately 12,000 of them took place. The town’s strategic location allowed for Union and Confederate troops to move through Harpers Ferry frequently. The town changed hands eight times between 1861 and 1865.
