Spanish Military Hospital Museum

St. Augustine, Florida

Located on Aviles Street—the oldest street in America’s oldest city—the Spanish Military Hospital Museum tells the story of what it was like to be a doctor or a patient in 1791. It shows how Spanish physicians used knowledge from Europe and Africa to care for their patients, a strategy that resulted in an impressive survival rate. The Spanish Military Hospital Museum is an authentic reconstruction of a military hospital that stood there during the Second Spanish Colonial Period (1784–1821). It is one of the more than fifty buildings and properties in St. Augustine that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
