The Liberty Bell

Philadelphia, PA

Located in Independence National Historical Park, the Liberty Bell was a symbol of protest and celebration and still stands as an international symbol of freedom. It started its service as the Pennsylvania State House Bell; from there it went on to become a rallying cry to end slavery and inspired the modern civil rights movement. The inscription on the Bell reads: “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof”. Today, there are two other bells in the park: The Centennial Bell, which still rings every hour and was forged for the nation’s 100th birthday, and the Bicentennial Bell, given to the United States by Great Britain in 1975.
