U.S. Capitol

The Capitol is the meeting place of U.S. Congress and the seat of the legislative branch of the country. Located in the Visitor’s Center is Emancipation Hall, named for the enslaved workers who helped build the Capitol but didn’t enjoy freedom during their lifetimes. The Hall has statues, with each state donating two, honoring people important to U.S. history. The Capitol Rotunda features a “Frieze of American History,” a series of 19 paintings arranged in a circle depicting the country’s history, including significant events like the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the landing of the pilgrims, the California gold rush and the birth of aviation.
