U.S. Naval Academy

The Naval Academy was established in 1845 on 10 secluded acres in Annapolis to keep the student body of 50 midshipmen away from “big city” temptations. The original curriculum included mathematics and navigation, gunnery and steam, chemistry, English, natural philosophy and French. Today, the campus is 338 acres with a student body of 4,000 studying a far more advanced curriculum. The Academy first accepted women as midshipmen in 1976, when Congress authorized the admission of women to all the service academies. Women now comprise 20% of entering plebes and pursue the same academic and professional training as their male classmates. Among other notable individuals, alumni include U.S. president, James Carter.
