Valley Forge National Historical Park

King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

Valley Forge is the site of a Revolutionary War encampment occupied by Gen. George Washington’s troops in 1777-1778. Washington chose Valley Forge for its proximity to Philadelphia, then occupied by British troops. A blended army of wealthy officers and soldiers, including poor enlisted men and free and enslaved blacks, spent the winter at Valley Forge training to fight as a cohesive unit. They were reshaped into a unified force capable of defeating the British and winning American independence. Reforms in fighting tactics, military hygiene, organization and supply systems became the standards of the U.S. Army. Trails connect monuments and historic structures.
